Founders of ABC Ministry
Vision

ABC Ministry is a home for abandoned and unwanted babies. ABC stands for A bandoned B abies for C hrist . We take in abandoned and unwanted babies, who, most times, are close to death, nurse them back to health and care for them as their substitute parents. We then either try to replace them back into their biological families, or we find good homes for them to be adopted into. Our first aim is to work with the biological family and counsel them, trying at all times to keep the child within its natural family. We will only remove a baby from its mother and family if we find that the baby's life is in danger and it will not survive within the family.

History of ABC : In August 1992, an abandoned, 4 month old boy found his way into our home. He was extremely mal-nourished, neglected and deprived. He weighed only 3,4 KGs! As I nursed him back to life, he found a very special place in our hearts and lives. When he was well and gaining weight and the threat of death had been removed from his life, we tried desperately to find a good family to take him in, as at this point we had 3 of our own children and a foster son, to care for. When we realised that there was nowhere else for him to go, we decided to adopt him as our own son. In November 1993, another little, abandoned boy found his way into our home. This one was 12 months old and had been physically abused, also suffering from neglect and kwashiorkor(extreme lack of protein in the diet). After nursing him back to health, we realised that there was nowhere for him to go and so we adopted him as well.
It was due to this lack, that we looked into the matter more and found that very little help was being given to the abandoned or unwanted baby. In Swaziland , there is no Children's Act to protect the child. Children were not top of the priority list and so very little was being done, in this country, to accommodate these children. They live and die and no-one really knows of their existence.
The Swazi Government is becoming more and more aware of the plight of the abused or abandoned baby, and something is starting to be done about the problem. Change takes time, and for some children the time is running out. When we realised this, we made a decision to help these children wherever we could and whenever we came into contact with babies or children in this situation. It was out of this lack and this need, here in Swaziland , that ABC Ministry was born.

Swaziland Police Force has a fairly good Crime Prevention Unit with Child Protection officers who work closely with us. Most of our babies are coming to us through them. We then know that the case has been thoroughly investigated and that we are the last resort for the baby. More and more babies are being abandoned and dumped as rape, incest and HIV/AIDs is on the increase and so we are seeing a large increase in our numbers of babies coming in. The ABC Ministry vision is to be able to receive the abandoned babies and love and care for them, allowing them to bond to a single mother figure in the early months of their lives.

As HIV/AIDs is claiming many lives ere in Swaziland it is now rated as one of the top countries in the world for HIV/AIDs and is known as the “Nation of Orphans”! Statistically it has been stated that unless help is given to the orphans of Swaziland , the Swazi person, as we know them today, will be an extinct race by the year 2050. We need to educate ourselves, and our children, to this disease.

The babies that we are unable to return to their families or place into adoptive homes remain within the ABC Ministry Home until the age of 3 or 4 years old. They will then move from our Home into their permanent foster homes, in the Bulembu Village of Hope Orphan Village, where they can be raised to adulthood under the love and care of foster parents. In these homes, they will live within the structure of a Godly family life, and in this way we hope to maintain their individuality and prevent them from becoming institutionalised, recognising them as individuals and not just as another number or statistic. These children will receive good education and good care because we see them as the future of Swaziland .

Robyn enjoys spending time holding the babies.
